WHALES AND FISH

Bodies of water and their habitats have been a major focus in my art. Water has influenced my paintings, installations, ceramic, and textile works. Although I am fearful of water I also find it mysteriously compelling. Water contains mystery because it conducts its own rules of order and hierarchy different than land. It is also compelling because it is essential for all living things and their existence.

These series of small oil paintings were based on both fish and whales. When beginning these paintings I started to sketch using mixed media. Later, I scanned the images changing the color opacity and its variations. Finally these altered drawings were my inspiration for the following series of paintings. My overall goal was to give these water animals a sense of visual movement and rhythm relating my paintings to the movement and rhythm of the ocean and its inhabitants.
